Meets the second Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is May 10, 2011.
Sessions will be held at Willowwind School, 950 Dover Street, Iowa City, IA. Pizza and beverages are served at 6 pm; groups run 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Parents/Guardians meet separately while their children are meeting. Childcare is available with advance notice. A bereavement counselor is available for assessment, consultation, information and referral for individuals or family groups.

GRIEF, HEALING & WELLNESS
We invite participants of KUL & ROLL to join us for a mid-summer Scavenger Hunt at the Iowa Children’s Museum (ICM) on Tuesday, July 12. The ICM Scavenger hunt is a fun way to strengthen a child’s learning experience while adding structure to their exploration of the museum. During an ICM Scavenger Hunt children, youth and their families can experience everything from putting together a race car and racing it on the track to making a pig fly with a parachute. And do not forget to “Take Flight” in a real flight simulator!
The ICM Scavenger hunt will run from 4:00–5:00 p.m.; pizza and beverages will be served at 6 p.m.

COOKING FOR ONE
Wednesday, June 8, 5:00-6:00 p.m.
The death of a loved one or any sudden life change can affect people in many ways. It is not uncommon to start snacking instead of fixing healthy meals. The result may be an increase in unhealthy choices and patterns.
Cooking for One is designed to offer practical ways to cope with loss and change. The class will offer recipes, ways to prepare meals, portion control strategies, grocery shopping tips, and more. Registered Dietician, Cathy Gehris will be on hand to demonstrate different ways to cook and to offer tasty samples.
This program will be held at the Hy-Vee East Store at 812 South First Avenue in Iowa City.

WRITING WITH ILLNESS
Saturday, July 9, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Writing with Illness is a three-hour seminar designed for those who are living with a life limiting health condition. The seminar uses writing exercises, short readings and poetry to honor and record our experiences of living with illness. Patrick Dolan, PhD, lecturer, The University of Iowa Department of Rhetoric and local writer Jennifer New will co-facilitate this innovative program. The location will be Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street in Iowa City. Refreshments will be provided.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR GRIEF
Tuesdays, May 24 & 31, June 7, 14, 21 & 28, 6-7:30 p.m.
Understanding Your Grief is a six-week, professionally led, grief education and support group series for adults who have experienced the loss of a loved one. This group provides a safe setting to help you understand the grieving process, learn ways to manage your grief, and share with others who have experienced a similar loss.
Each program is held at Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street in Iowa City.

Tear Soup is a one hour program designed to support individuals through grief, loss and life transition. Iowa City Hospice grief support staff will lead a viewing and discussion of the DVD presentation,Tear Soup: A Recipe for Healing after Loss. Emphasis is placed on how each of us grieves in our own way and in our own time when we face the loss of a loved one, a life limiting health diagnosis, a move away from home, or any major life change. This unique program developed for the entire family will be offered at community centers, long term care facilities and neighborhood associations through out the summer.

EDUCATION
Volunteer Training
Iowa City Hospice offers a training
and orientation for those
interested in becoming a patient care
or bereavement volunteer. Volunteers must
be at least 18 years old. You must pre-register and attend ALL 14 hours of the required training sessions. Class size is limited. Trainings are offered 2-3 times a year.
Following training, volunteers’ schedules are very flexible. Volunteers provide companionship and support to terminally ill patients and their loved ones.

Volunteers Serving Veteran is a 4 hour training program for Iowa City Hospice Volunteers and Staff which focuses on the special needs of veterans at the end of their life.
Emotional triggers for a veterans nearing death can include traumatic war experiences, unresolved moral issues about life and death, post traumatic stress disorder, and trust issues. This presentation will provide hospice volunteers and staff the resources for respectful inquiry into the veteran's war experience, for promoting rapport with veteran patients, and for honoring their service and sacrifice.
Attendee's are strongly urged to read the book, Breaking Squelch, before the presentation; however, this is not a requirement. Copies are available at the Iowa City Hospice office.

The 2011 Walk for Dignity is a community event that gives friends and families an opportunity to celebrate lives and honor memories of their loved ones, and show support for Iowa City Hospice; 100% of the donations go directly to the patient services provided by Iowa City Hospice.
